US and EU ignore ICJ ruling and focus instead on Israel's allegations of UNRWA employees involved in the 7 October Hamas attack
...while the US is on the brink of civil war.
As you probably know, today the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has recognized the right of Palestinians in Gaza to be protected from Israel’s acts of genocide and ordered Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, without explicitly ordering a ceasefire though.
However, just one hour later, the UNRWA announced investigations of alleged involvement of its employees in the 7 October attacks by Hamas:
Interesting timing, isn’t it? It looks like “someone” wanted to divert attention from the ICJ ruling.
Not only that, but less than two hours later, the US State Department announced that it “has temporarily paused additional funding for UNRWA”… just on the base of allegations from Israel. Also the EU is considering “further steps” based on these allegations:
“Funny” how the US State Department and the EU Foreign Policy Office completely ignored the ICJ ruling based on hard facts (tens of thousands of Palestinians killed and injured, not to mention the genocidal words of Israeli President, Prime Minister and Ministers) and instead immediately took action following Israel’s allegations of UNRWA employees involved in the 7 October attacks by Hamas in Israel.
It is not that I was expecting US and EU to sanction Israel soon after the ICJ ruling, but this just shows once again their hypocrisy and double-standards.
I seriously hope that, now that the ICJ ruling is out, the Rest of the World will finally start imposing sanctions on Israel, if Benjamin Netanyahu does not stop the genocide.
In the meantime civil war may erupt any time soon in the US, given the standoff between Texas governor, Greg Abbott, and Republicans on one side and POTUS Joe Biden and the Democrats on the other, regarding the issue of border control:
UPDATE 1 (27/01/2024):
I have read some additional analysis of the ICJ ruling and I would like to add the following: the ICJ “could not order a general ceasefire because its jurisdiction covers only one of the waring parties. An order for a general ceasefire would require that all parties of a conflict are nation states and have signed the Genocide Convention. Hamas however is not a state and is not a signatory of the Genocide Convention and thus not under the ICJ's jurisdiction”. For more details, please refer to this post of Moon of Alabama.

UPDATE 2 (27/01/2024):
After the US and Canada yesterday, today also Australia and Italy have announced that they are suspending financing of UNRWA after Israeli allegations:
Strange I have not heard a word about suspending weapons and ammo supply to Israel after the ICJ ruling…
UPDATE 3 (28/01/2024):
As of today, 28th January 2024, 9 countries have suspended funding to UNRWA, based on Israeli accusations that 12 of its 30,000 employees (i.e. 0.04% of its staff!) were involved in Hamas attacks on Israel on 7th October 2023. These countries are:
USA
Canada
Australia
Italy
United Kingdom
Germany
Netherlands
Switzerland
Finland
