What Ursula von der Leyen's re-election as President of European Commission means for Europe
...especially in light of recent developments, including the just-announced Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race.
No, this is not another article incensing Ursula von der Leyen, like those on the mainstream media (MSM), e.g. this CNN article or this EuroNews article, actually quite the opposite, more like this one on Al Mayadeen.
On Thursday 18th July 2024 Ursula Von der Leyen was re-elected as head of the European Commission, despite:
her condemnation by the European Court of Justice for non-transparency on the purchase of vaccines the day before (see for instance this article on Politico),
the complaint against her to the International Criminal Court for complicity in war crimes with Netanyahu (see for instance this Middle East Eye article),
her silence towards Israeli state terrorism.
There were 401 votes in favour, 284 against, 15 abstentions and 7 void ballots. 361 votes were needed for the election, she got 40 more.
In her speech she never uttered the words poverty and unemployment, totally allergic to the word peace, complete subservience to the Outlaw US Empire and an exclusively warmongering view on the NATO-Russia conflict. In short, a catastrophe widely seen and heralded for the next five years.
But I do not want to bother you with Ursula von der Leyen’s speech. Instead, I invite you to watch this video of Polish MEP Ewa Zajaczkowska, destroying Ursula Von der Leyen ahead of her re-election, claiming that she “should go to prison, not the European Commission!”
Ursula has been re-elected for a new five-year term as President of the European Commission and the European people have no recourse to vote her out and stop her warmongering.
Some analysts, such as Gilbert Doctorow, stated that Trump’s election in November may “reverse the power balance here in Europe and drain away the power from the newly installed European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen, redirecting power to Viktor Orban and his fellow thinkers who want to restore sovereignty to the member states and whittle away at the authoritarian neo-Cons presently in control of Europe’s supranational government structures sitting in Brussels”. I would not be so fast. First of all, Ursula von der Leyen has been elected for another 5 years and, before her, all the other warmongering MEPs, as well as the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, not to mention the newly appointed High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. With these people in power in Europe, it is very unlikely that they will stop the war in Ukraine, in my humble opinion, even if Trump wins the US Presidential elections in November and stop sending weapons and ammo to Ukraine. I am pretty sure that the neo-cons in the Outlaw US Empire and within the European institutions will not let this occasion go wasted: they will keep pumping weapons and ammo in Ukraine, even without the US assistance.

P.S.: Just before publishing this article, I have read the news that Joe Biden is withdrawing from the Presidential race, as reported for instance by Al Mayadeen and The Guardian. This makes Trump’s re-election even more likely than before, as the Democrats now have 4 months before the elections to find a candidate and campaign for him/her, whereas Trump’s probability of re-election were recently boosted by the failed attempt to his life.
